Why Your IA Matters So Much
The Internal Assessment (IA) is a critical component of your final IB grade for each subject. It's your opportunity to showcase your skills as an independent learner and researcher. A well-executed IA can significantly boost your overall score. Use this checklist to stay on track and maximize your marks.
The High-Scoring IA Checklist
- 1. Understand the Rubric Inside-Out: Before you even think of a topic, find the official IB assessment criteria for your subject's IA. Print it out. Highlight the key requirements for the top mark bands. Every decision you make should be guided by this rubric.
- 2. Choose a Focused and Personal Topic: The best IAs stem from genuine curiosity. Choose a topic that is narrow enough to be explored in-depth but also allows for personal engagement. For sciences, this means a clear, testable research question. For humanities, a specific and arguable thesis.
- 3. Plan Your Methodology Meticulously: How will you gather your data or evidence? For science IAs, this involves a detailed, replicable procedure. For a history IA, this means selecting appropriate primary and secondary sources. Justify your methodological choices clearly in your report.
- 4. Collect and Process Your Data Rigorously: Execute your plan. Be systematic and thorough. For quantitative data, ensure you use appropriate statistical tools and present your processed data in clear tables and graphs. For qualitative data, organize your evidence logically to support your argument.
- 5. Analysis and Evaluation are Key: This is where top marks are won or lost. Don't just present your findings; analyze them. What do they mean? How do they relate to your research question? Critically evaluate your methodology: what were the strengths and, more importantly, the limitations of your investigation?
- 6. Structure Your Report Professionally: Follow the expected format for your subject. Use clear headings, label diagrams and tables correctly, and ensure your writing is concise and academic in tone. Your IA should be easy for an examiner to read and follow.
- 7. Cite Everything Correctly: Academic honesty is paramount. Use a consistent citation style (e.g., MLA, APA) throughout your report and include a full bibliography or works cited list. Failure to do so can result in losing significant marks or even failing the diploma.
By systematically working through this checklist, you can approach your IA with confidence and produce a piece of work that truly reflects your abilities and earns the high score you deserve.
